Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Liverpool
We started to treat patients at our new satellite radiotherapy centre ‘Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Liverpool’ on 14th February 2011.
The new £17M state-of-the-art, purpose built facility offers cancer patients living north of the River Mersey improved access to treatment. The centre is staffed and operated by Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology’s own specialist radiographers and doctors delivering radiotherapy treatments as well as expert cancer rehabilitation and support services.
Local charity The Marina Dalglish Appeal supported the project, contributing more than £3million towards the development.
There are a number of great achievements surrounding the new centre, namely receiving ‘Excellent’ status in the BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) assessment at a very early stage in the development. The BREEAM assessment tests the build on a number of criteria, from energy efficiency to arts co-ordination and staff and patient welfare. Generous funding from Macmillan Cancer Support has ensured the outside space replicates the picturesque landscape that Clatterbridge’s current site in Wirral benefits from with national landscapers FIRA designing a spectacular internal garden area for patients to enjoy. An Arts Co-ordinator was also appointed and three designers were chosen who worked with patients and staff in hands-on workshops to develop sculptures and artwork for the building, and oak carvings for the garden. Solar panels will provide hot water for the whole building. The building itself is highly energy efficient, with excellent insulation which will save on heating costs and reduce our carbon footprint.
Clatterbridge Chief Executive Andrew Cannell said: "We could not be more impressed with the finished product. The Board at Clatterbridge announced plans to build this new centre less than two years ago – so to see it finished and ready to treat patients so soon is a real delight. The development has surpassed our expectations – what we have achieved is an innovative and progressive facility that will lead the way in radiotherapy technologies and treatments and I am very proud to be involved in what will be a huge benefit to Merseyside cancer patients."
