Volunteering

We are sorry that CCO Volunteer Team does not currently have any vacancies. The next Volunteer Team Recruitment Event will be held in September 2011.
However, the WRVS and the hospital charity ‘Clatterbridge your cancer centre’ currently have vacancies.

For WRVS volunteering enquiries, please contact Richard Inglesby on 0151 334 1155 ext 4802 or Richard.inglesby@ccotrust.nhs.uk.

If you are interested in volunteering for ‘Clatterbridge your cancer centre’, please contact Jade Barrett on 0151 482 7948 or jade.barrett@ccotrust.nhs.uk

Volunteers are always wanted at CCO and they play a vital role by:

  • Enhancing the care provided by hospital staff
  • Reducing the stress of hospital visits for both patients and visitors

Who can volunteer?

We welcome all volunteers – aged 16 or over – irrespective of gender or background.

We ask that you are reliable, cheerful and sociable.

What do volunteers do?

  • Meet and greet patients and visitors when they arrive and show them to the appropriate department or ward
  • Serve refreshments to outpatients and their friends or family
  • Work in the WRVS Coffee Bar or shop
  • Visit and befriend inpatients on wards and departments (PALS)
  • Provide an errand and message service to wards and departments
  • Help receptionists and administrators in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy
  • Organise activities and social sessions for inpatients to help pass the time. This includes glass-painting and the Internet
  • Run the patients’ library
  • Join the chaplaincy team
  • Drive patients to hospital appointments
  • Greet visitors to the MacMillan Cancer Information Centre
  • Provide relaxing, simple hand massage for patients

How much time do I have to give?

Most volunteers come in once a week for a regular session of three or four hours. A regular commitment is needed for a minimum period of six months.

What skills are needed?

For all volunteering opportunities, we need volunteers who get on well with people and are good at putting others at their ease. We need good listeners, who are patient and tolerant.

I’m interested, what do I do?

We ask that people wait two years after receiving treatment for cancer themselves or after the loss of a close relative, as this period provides a distance that can be beneficial when volunteering.
